In 1862, Henry Rowntree bought a cocoa works in York and turned it into a sweet confectionery company. Rowntree was joined in business in 1869 by his brother Joseph Rowntree, who then took over and transformed the sweet company’s fortunes. The Rowntree brothers hired French confectioner August Claude Gaget. With his expertise, the recipe for Rowntree’s® Fruit Pastilles sweets was discovered, which they launched in 1881. In 1988 Rowntree’s was bought by Nestlé, who decided to keep Rowntree’s as the name of their UK fruit sweet confectionery range. Rowntree’s Randoms launched in 2009, and quickly became one of the UK’s favourite sweets. Today, Rowntree’s are still the nation’s fruity favourite, with more single tubes of Fruit Pastilles sweets sold than any other fruit sweet confectionery product in the UK. In fact, Rowntrees sweet products are enjoyed by 15 million people every year!
